Explanation

The First Pledge of Aqabah (Bay'ah al-Aqabah al-Ula) occurred in the 12th year of Prophethood when twelve men from Yathrib (Madina) met the Prophet (PBUH) at Aqabah during the Hajj season and accepted Islam. They pledged to worship Allah alone, avoid theft, adultery, killing of children, and slander, and to obey the Prophet in all good deeds. This pledge laid the foundation for the spread of Islam in Madina and paved the way for the Second Pledge of Aqabah the following year.

Good to know

The First Pledge of Aqabah involved twelve people from the Khazraj and Aws tribes of Madina — ten from Khazraj and two from Aws. Mus'ab ibn Umair (R.A) was sent back with them to Madina to teach Islam. The Second Pledge of Aqabah took place in 13 Nabawi with seventy-three men and two women, which ultimately led to the Hijrah (migration) to Madina.
