Explanation

Marwan II, also known as Marwan al-Himar (Marwan the Donkey), was the 14th and final caliph of the Umayyad dynasty. He came to power after a period of internal turmoil and civil wars among the Umayyads. His reign ended when the Abbasid revolutionaries defeated his forces at the Battle of the Zab in 750 CE. Marwan II fled to Egypt where he was eventually captured and killed, marking the end of Umayyad rule and the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate.

The Umayyad dynasty ruled the Islamic world from 661 to 750 CE, with its capital at Damascus. It was founded by Muawiyah I and produced 14 caliphs in total. After the fall of the Umayyads, Abd al-Rahman I, a surviving member of the Umayyad family, escaped to Spain and established the Umayyad Emirate of Cordoba, which later became a caliphate. Marwan II's defeat at the Battle of the Zab River by the Abbasid forces under Abu Muslim al-Khurasani effectively sealed the fate of the Umayyad dynasty.
