Quick fact: The leader of the first Hajj in Islam in 9 AH was Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA).

Explanation

In the 9th year of Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) appointed Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) as the Amir-ul-Hajj to lead the first official Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah. This was significant because it was the first Hajj performed solely under Islamic rites after the conquest of Makkah. Later, Hazrat Ali (RA) was sent to join the caravan and proclaim the verses of Surah At-Tawbah, declaring the annulment of treaties with the polytheists.

Good to know

The first Hajj in Islam took place in 9 AH, a year before the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself performed his only Hajj, known as Hajjat-ul-Wida (the Farewell Pilgrimage) in 10 AH. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) led a group of about 300 Muslims from Madinah to Makkah for this historic pilgrimage. The Prophet (PBUH) did not participate in this Hajj as he was occupied with the affairs of the expanding Islamic state, including the expedition of Tabuk.
