Quick fact: The second migration to Habsha (Abyssinia) was led by Hazrat Jafar Tayar (R.A).

Explanation

The second migration to Habsha took place in 615 CE (5th year of Prophethood) when a larger group of Muslims, including 83 men and 18 women, migrated to Abyssinia to escape the severe persecution of the Quraysh. Hazrat Jafar ibn Abi Talib (R.A), the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and elder brother of Hazrat Ali (R.A), was appointed as the leader and spokesperson of this migrant group. He famously represented the Muslims before Negus (Najashi), the Christian king of Abyssinia, and recited verses from Surah Maryam, which moved the king to grant the Muslims protection.

Good to know

The first migration to Habsha involved 12 men and 4 women, while the second migration was significantly larger. Hazrat Jafar Tayar (R.A) earned the title "Tayar" (the one who flies) because he lost both his arms in the Battle of Mauta and was granted wings in Paradise by Allah. The Prophet (PBUH) himself did not migrate to Habsha; he remained in Makkah continuing his mission. The migrants stayed in Abyssinia for several years and later joined the Prophet (PBUH) in Madina after the migration.
