Explanation

Najashi (Negus) was the title given to the kings of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), and the one who gave refuge to Muslims during the first migration to Habsha was Asmaha. He was a just and kind Christian king who, after hearing the recitation of Surah Maryam, recognized the truth of Islam and provided protection to the Muslim emigrants. The Prophet (PBUH) later performed his funeral prayer in absentia (Salat al-Ghaib) when Najashi passed away.

Good to know

The migration to Abyssinia (Habsha) took place in the 5th year of Prophethood, when the Prophet (PBUH) instructed a group of Muslims to seek refuge from Quraysh persecution. The first group consisted of 12 men and 4 women, and later a second larger group of 83 men and 18 women followed, led by Jafar ibn Abi Talib (R.A). Najashi refused to hand over the Muslims to the Quraysh delegation led by Amr ibn al-As, and he is remembered as a righteous ruler who embraced Islam secretly according to many scholars.
