Explanation

The Majallah al-Ahkam al-Adliyyah (Resalah Majallah) was the Ottoman civil code based on Hanafi fiqh, compiled between 1869 and 1876. It was issued and applied in Islamic courts (Shariah courts) of the Ottoman Empire and represented the first codification of Islamic law in a modern legal format. It covered contracts, torts, and procedural law based on Islamic jurisprudence.

Good to know

The Majallah was drafted by a commission headed by Ahmed Cevdet Pasha under the Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz. It consisted of 1,851 articles and was applied in the Ottoman Empire's civil courts, which were essentially Islamic courts operating under Shariah principles. The code remained in force in several successor states even after the Ottoman Empire's collapse, including Turkey until 1926.
