Explanation

The title 'Umm al-Qura' (Umm al-Qura) means "Mother of Cities" and is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-An'am (6:92). Makkah holds this title because it is the birthplace of Islam, houses the Kaaba—the first house of worship built for mankind—and serves as the spiritual center toward which all Muslims turn in prayer. It is considered the origin and heart of all human civilization in Islamic belief.

Good to know

The term 'Umm al-Qura' appears in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-An'am, verse 92, where Allah refers to Makkah by this title. Makkah is also known by several other names in Islamic tradition, including Bakkah, Al-Balad Al-Amin (the Secure City), and Al-Haram (the Sacred Sanctuary). The city was founded by Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) and his son Ismail (A.S), who built the Kaaba as the first house dedicated to the worship of the One God.
