Explanation

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born on Monday, 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, in the Year of the Elephant (Aam-ul-Feel), which corresponds to approximately 570-571 CE. This day is widely commemorated by Muslims as Eid Milad-un-Nabi. The Prophet (PBUH) himself is reported to have fasted on Mondays, and when asked about it, he said, "That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received revelation."

Good to know

The birth of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) took place in Makkah at the house of Abu Talib, in the early morning hours. His father Abdullah had passed away before his birth, and his mother was Amina bint Wahb. The Year of the Elephant is named after the event when Abraha, the Abyssinian ruler of Yemen, marched with his army of elephants to destroy the Kaaba but was miraculously defeated by birds carrying stones of baked clay, as mentioned in Surah Al-Fil.
