Explanation

The Arabic word 'Zikr' literally means remembrance, mention, or recollection. In Islamic terminology, it specifically refers to the act of remembering and mentioning Allah through recitation of His names, attributes, praises, and glorifications. Zikr is a fundamental act of worship in Islam, emphasized in the Quran where Allah says, "So remember Me; I will remember you" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:152). It can be performed silently in the heart or verbally through specific supplications and phrases like SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar.

Good to know

Zikr holds a central place in Islamic spirituality and is considered nourishment for the soul. The Quran repeatedly commands believers to engage in Zikr abundantly, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described it as one of the best deeds. There are various forms of Zikr, including Zikr-e-Jali (loud remembrance) and Zikr-e-Khafi (silent remembrance). The gatherings of Zikr are highly praised in Hadith, with angels surrounding those who remember Allah collectively.
