Explanation

Hijr-e-Aswad is an Arabic term where "Hijr" means stone and "Aswad" means black. It is a sacred stone placed in the eastern corner of the Kaaba in Makkah. According to Islamic tradition, it descended from Paradise and was originally white but turned black due to the sins of mankind. During Hajj and Umrah, pilgrims try to kiss or touch it following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Good to know

The Hijr-e-Aswad is placed about 1.5 meters above the ground in the eastern corner of the Kaaba. It was installed by Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) and his son Ismail (A.S) during the construction of the Kaaba. During the time of the Prophet (PBUH), the Quraysh disputed over who would place the stone, and the Prophet (PBUH) resolved the dispute by placing it on a cloth and having all tribal chiefs lift it together.
