Ibn Khuldun's full name was Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Khuldun al-Hadrami. Though his family originally hailed from Seville in Muslim Spain (Andalusia), they migrated to Tunisia after the Christian Reconquista. He served in various political and diplomatic roles across North Africa and later in Mamluk Egypt, where he also served as a chief judge.
