Explanation

Tafsir is the science of explaining and interpreting the Quran. One of the primary methods of Tafsir is "Tafsir al-Quran bil-Quran," meaning interpreting the Quran by the Quran itself, where one verse clarifies or elaborates upon another. This is considered the highest and most authoritative form of Tafsir because the Quran is the ultimate source of guidance, and its verses often explain each other. Other methods include Tafsir by Hadith (bil-Hadith), by the sayings of the Companions (bil-Athar), and by linguistic analysis.

Good to know

The science of Tafsir developed early in Islamic history to help Muslims understand the meanings, context, and rulings of Quranic verses. Renowned classical Tafsir works include Tafsir al-Tabari, Tafsir ibn Kathir, and Tafsir al-Qurtubi. The method of interpreting the Quran through the Quran itself is rooted in the principle that the Quran is self-explanatory in many places — for instance, a general statement in one verse may be detailed in another, or an ambiguous word may be clarified by its usage elsewhere in the text.
