Explanation

Abu Jehal, whose real name was Umer bin Hisham, was one of the fiercest opponents of Islam during the Makkan period. He belonged to the Banu Makhzum clan of the Quraysh tribe. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) referred to him as "Abu Jehal" (Father of Ignorance) because of his extreme hostility and arrogance towards the message of Islam. He was killed in the Battle of Badr.

Good to know

Abu Jehal's original name was Umer bin Hisham, and he was also known as Abul Hakam before Islam due to his wisdom among the Quraysh. He was a maternal uncle of Hazrat Umar (R.A.) and played a leading role in persecuting early Muslims. His enmity was so notorious that the Prophet (PBUH) once prayed, "O Allah, strengthen Islam with one of the two Umers" — referring to Umer bin Hisham (Abu Jehal) or Umer bin Khattab, and Allah answered the prayer by guiding Hazrat Umar (R.A.) to Islam.
