Quick fact: Abu Lahab opposed Banu Hashim when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was young.

Explanation

Abu Lahab, whose real name was Abdul Uzza, was the paternal uncle of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Despite being a close relative from Banu Hashim himself, he became one of the fiercest opponents of the Prophet and Islam. His opposition began early — even during the Prophet's youth, he sided against Banu Hashim during the social and economic boycott. His enmity was so notorious that Surah Al-Masad (Surah Lahab) was revealed condemning him and his wife to the fire of Hell.

Good to know

Abu Lahab was the son of Abdul Muttalib and thus a direct uncle of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). When the Prophet began his public preaching, Abu Lahab would follow him and warn people not to listen to him. During the boycott of Banu Hashim in the Makkan period, Abu Lahab chose to side with the Quraysh against his own clan, further intensifying the hardship on the Prophet and his followers. His wife, Umm Jamil, also actively participated in persecuting the Prophet.
