Explanation

Surah Fatiha is called Ummul Kitab because it is the opening chapter of the Quran and encapsulates the essence of the entire divine message. The term "Umm" means mother, signifying that this Surah is the foundation and summary of the Quran's core teachings — including Tawheed, worship, guidance, and supplication. It is also known by several other names such as Al-Hamd, Al-Shifa, and Sab'a al-Mathani (the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses), highlighting its central importance in Islamic faith and daily prayers.

Good to know

Surah Fatiha consists of seven verses and is recited in every rak'ah of Salah, making it the most frequently recited chapter of the Quran. It holds a unique position as it is the only Surah that is a direct conversation between the worshipper and Allah, as described in a Hadith Qudsi. Without its recitation, the prayer is considered incomplete according to the majority of scholars.
