Explanation

Atheism is the absence or rejection of belief in the existence of any deity or God. This is fundamentally different from agnosticism (which holds that the existence of God is unknown or unknowable), polytheism (belief in multiple gods), and deism (belief in a creator who does not intervene in the universe). In Islamic theology, atheism is considered a form of kufr (disbelief) as it directly contradicts the core Islamic principle of Tauheed.

Good to know

The term "atheist" comes from the Greek word "atheos" meaning "without god." Atheism has existed in various forms throughout history, with some of the earliest recorded atheistic thought appearing in ancient Greek philosophy. In the context of Islamic studies, understanding atheism is important for comparative religion discussions and for appreciating the Islamic emphasis on fitrah—the innate human disposition to recognize the existence of a Creator.
