Quick fact: Hazrat Umar (R.A) appointed Hazrat Saad bin Abi Waqas (R.A) as the commander of the Muslim army in the Battle of Qadsiya.

Explanation

The Battle of Qadsiya (636 CE) was a decisive encounter between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Sassanid Persian Empire. Hazrat Umar (R.A) personally selected Hazrat Saad bin Abi Waqas (R.A), one of the Ashra Mubashra (the ten promised Paradise) and a maternal uncle of the Prophet (PBUH), to lead the campaign. Despite being ill during parts of the battle, Saad bin Abi Waqas (R.A) directed the army from a nearby elevated position and achieved a historic victory that opened the door for the Muslim conquest of Persia.

Good to know

The Battle of Qadsiya was fought near the Euphrates River in Iraq against the Persian forces led by Rustam. Hazrat Saad bin Abi Waqas (R.A) was also the governor of Kufa and is renowned for being the first to shoot an arrow in the path of Islam. Under his command, the Muslim army of around 30,000 soldiers defeated a much larger Persian force, leading to the fall of the Sassanid capital, Ctesiphon (Madain).
