Explanation

In the Battle of Badr, before the main battle commenced, three duels took place between the Quraysh and the Muslims. Walid ibn Utba, along with his uncle Shaybah ibn Rabiah and his father Utbah ibn Rabiah, stepped forward from the Quraysh side. Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Hamza (RA), and Hazrat Ubaidah ibn al-Harith (RA) faced them. Hazrat Ali (RA) specifically confronted and killed Walid ibn Utba, while Hazrat Hamza (RA) killed Utbah, and Hazrat Ubaidah (RA) was martyred after killing Shaybah with the help of his two companions.

Good to know

The Battle of Badr (2 AH) was the first major battle in Islamic history. Before the battle began, the tradition of single combat (mubaraza) was observed, where three prominent warriors of Quraysh — Utbah ibn Rabiah, Shaybah ibn Rabiah, and Walid ibn Utba — challenged the Muslims. The Prophet (PBUH) sent Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Hamza (RA), and Hazrat Ubaidah ibn al-Harith (RA) to face them. All three Quraysh warriors were slain, giving the Muslims a major morale boost before the main battle.
