Quick fact: Salat became obligatory for Muslims during the event of Miraj (Ascension).

Explanation

The five daily prayers (Salat) were made obligatory upon the Muslim Ummah during the night journey of Miraj, when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to the heavens. Initially, fifty prayers were prescribed, but upon the advice of Prophet Musa (AS), the Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly requested reduction until they were reduced to five. This event highlights the immense significance of Salat as the only act of worship directly commanded by Allah in the heavens, rather than through revelation on earth.

Good to know

Miraj took place in the 10th or 11th year of Prophethood, after the Year of Sorrow. The journey comprised two parts: Isra (night journey from Makkah to Al-Aqsa) and Miraj (ascension from Jerusalem to the heavens). During this blessed journey, the Prophet (PBUH) also saw Paradise, Hell, and met various prophets at different heavens. The event is referenced in Surah Al-Isra and Surah An-Najm.
