Explanation

Al Aqsa Mosque, situated in the Old City of Jerusalem, is the third holiest site in Islam after Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid al-Nabawi in Madina. It holds immense significance as it was the first Qibla (direction of prayer) before the change to the Kaaba, and it is the site from which the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to the heavens during the Night Journey (Isra and Meraj).

Good to know

Al Aqsa Mosque is part of the larger Al-Haram Al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary) compound in Jerusalem. The mosque is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Isra (17:1), which describes the Prophet's (PBUH) miraculous night journey from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa. It was originally built by Prophet Sulaiman (AS) and later rebuilt and expanded by various Muslim rulers, including the Umayyad Caliph Abdul Malik ibn Marwan.
