Quick fact: Prophet Younas (A.S.) remained in the belly of the fish for 40 days according to Islamic tradition.

Explanation

Prophet Younas (A.S.), also known as Dhun-Nun (the man of the fish), was swallowed by a large fish after he left his people in anger without Allah's permission. While in the belly of the fish, he recited the famous supplication "La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin" (There is no god but You, Glory be to You, I was indeed among the wrongdoers). Allah accepted his repentance and the fish cast him out onto the shore after 40 days.

Good to know

The story of Prophet Younas (A.S.) is mentioned in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:87-88) and Surah As-Saffat (37:139-148). He was sent to the people of Nineveh (near Mosul in present-day Iraq). The Quran mentions that had he not been among those who glorify Allah, he would have remained in the fish's belly until the Day of Resurrection. After being delivered, he returned to his people and they all believed in his message.
