Explanation

The Surahs of the Holy Quran are classified based on the place and period of revelation into Makki and Madni. Madni Surahs are those revealed after the Prophet's (PBUH) migration to Madina and generally deal with social laws, family matters, and state governance. Out of the 114 total Surahs, 28 are classified as Madni, while the remaining 86 are Makki. This classification helps in understanding the context and gradual development of Islamic legislation.

Good to know

The classification of Surahs into Makki and Madni is based on the Hijrah (migration) as the dividing line. Madni Surahs were revealed over approximately 10 years in Madina and typically contain detailed rulings on worship, social conduct, inheritance, and legal matters. Some well-known Madni Surahs include Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Aal-e-Imran, Surah Al-Nisa, and Surah Al-Ma'idah.
