Explanation

The Battle of Moota took place in 8 AH against the Byzantine forces. Hazrat Jaffar Tayyar (R.A), the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was one of the three commanders appointed successively — after Zaid bin Haritha (R.A) and before Abdullah bin Rawaha (R.A). He fought valiantly and was martyred after both his hands were severed while holding the flag, earning him the title "Tayyar" (the one who flies) as the Prophet (PBUH) said he was granted wings in Paradise.

Good to know

The Battle of Moota was the first major encounter between Muslims and the Byzantine Empire. Hazrat Jaffar Tayyar (R.A) was the brother of Hazrat Ali (R.A) and had earlier led the second migration to Abyssinia (Habsha). The Prophet (PBUH) deeply mourned his martyrdom and informed the companions that Jaffar had been granted two wings of emerald in Paradise, hence the title "Jaffar-e-Tayyar."
