Explanation

The Hudood Ordinance was promulgated in 1979 as part of General Zia-ul-Haq's Islamization process in Pakistan. It introduced Islamic criminal punishments for specific offenses including theft, adultery, false accusation of adultery, and consumption of alcohol. The ordinance was based on the Islamic legal concept of Hudood, which refers to fixed punishments prescribed in the Quran and Sunnah for certain crimes.

Good to know

The Hudood Ordinance comprised five separate ordinances: the Offence Against Property (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance, the Offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance, the Offence of Qazf (Enforcement of Hadd) Ordinance, the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order, and the Execution of Punishment of Whipping Ordinance. These laws were later amended through the Protection of Women Act 2006 and the Criminal Law Amendment Act 2004.
