Explanation

The Hashmi clan (Banu Hashim) was a sub-clan of the Quraysh tribe of Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ was the great-grandson of Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, after whom the clan is named. This lineage is significant because the Banu Hashim were the custodians of the Kaaba and held a position of great respect among the Arabs even before Islam.

Good to know

The Quraysh was the dominant tribe of Makkah, divided into several clans including Banu Hashim, Banu Umayyah, Banu Makhzum, and others. The Prophet's ﷺ full lineage traces back to Adnan, a descendant of Prophet Ismail (A.S). His grandfather Abdul Muttalib was a prominent chief of Banu Hashim and rediscovered the well of Zamzam.
