Shahadat comes from the Arabic root "shahida" meaning to witness or bear witness. In Islamic terminology, it refers to the declaration of faith — bearing testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His Messenger. This testimony is the first and most fundamental pillar of Islam, serving as the gateway through which a person enters the fold of Islam.
The Kalima Shahadat is the second of the six Kalimas and reads: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu" (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger). The concept of Shahadat also extends to martyrdom in Islam, where a shaheed bears the ultimate testimony of faith by sacrificing their life in the path of Allah.
