Explanation

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. For gold, the Nisab is 7.5 tola, which is equivalent to approximately 87.48 grams or 3 ounces of gold. If a person owns gold equal to or exceeding this amount for a full lunar year, they must pay 2.5% (one-fortieth) of its value as Zakat.

Good to know

The Nisab for silver is 52.5 tola (approximately 612.36 grams). In modern times, scholars generally advise using the silver Nisab as the standard for calculating Zakat on cash and trade goods because it is lower and thus benefits more recipients. The obligation of Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, mentioned repeatedly in the Quran alongside Salah.
