Explanation

A Muhaddith is a scholar who specializes in the science of Hadith, including its narration, memorization, authentication, and classification. The term derives from the Arabic root "ḥ-d-th," relating to speech or narration. A Muhaddith not only narrates Hadith but also possesses deep knowledge of the chains of transmission (isnad) and the biographies of narrators (rijal) to assess the reliability of each report.

Good to know

The science of Hadith (ʿUlum al-Hadith) developed to preserve the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Scholars like Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, and others dedicated their lives to collecting and authenticating Hadith. The term Muhaddith is distinct from other scholarly titles: a Mufassir interprets the Quran, a Faqih is a jurist, and a Qari is a reciter of the Quran.
