Quick fact: Al-Farabi was given the title "The Second Teacher" (Al-Mu'allim al-Thani), with Aristotle being regarded as the First Teacher.

Explanation

Al-Farabi (872–950 CE) was a renowned Muslim philosopher, logician, and political thinker who wrote extensive commentaries on Aristotle's works. Because of his profound understanding and interpretation of Aristotelian philosophy, he earned the title "Al-Mu'allim al-Thani" (The Second Teacher), with Aristotle himself being considered "Al-Mu'allim al-Awwal" (The First Teacher). Al-Farabi's works bridged Greek philosophy and Islamic thought, influencing later scholars like Ibn Sina (Avicenna).

Good to know

Abu Nasr Muhammad al-Farabi was born in Farab (present-day Kazakhstan) and spent much of his life in Baghdad, studying under Christian Nestorian scholars. He wrote over 100 works on philosophy, logic, music, and political theory, with his most famous being "Al-Madina al-Fadila" (The Virtuous City). Al-Farabi was also an accomplished musician and wrote "Kitab al-Musiqa al-Kabir" (The Great Book of Music). He passed away in Damascus around 950 CE.
