Quick fact: The Muslim scientist who discovered the radius of the earth was Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni.

Explanation

Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni (973–1048 CE) was a Persian polymath who made groundbreaking contributions to astronomy, mathematics, geography, and physics. He developed a novel trigonometric method to calculate the Earth's circumference and radius with remarkable accuracy. By measuring the height of a mountain and the angle of the horizon from its peak, he computed the Earth's radius to be approximately 6,339 km, which is astonishingly close to the modern accepted value of 6,371 km.

Good to know

Al-Biruni flourished during the Islamic Golden Age and served in the court of Mahmud of Ghazni. He authored the famous work "Kitab al-Qanun al-Mas'udi" (The Mas'udi Canon), an extensive encyclopedia on astronomy and geography. His method for calculating the Earth's radius was described in his book "Kitab Tahdid Nihayat al-Amakin" (The Determination of the Coordinates of Cities). Al-Biruni is also known for his encyclopedic work on India titled "Kitab al-Hind."
