Quick fact: The Ghusl (ritual washing) of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) after his passing was performed by Hazrat Ali (RA), assisted by Hazrat Abbas (RA) and his sons.

Explanation

After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his cousin and son-in-law Hazrat Ali (RA) was given the honor of performing the ritual washing (Ghusl). He was assisted by his uncle Hazrat Abbas (RA) and his sons Fadl and Qutham. Hazrat Usama bin Zaid and the Prophet's servant Shukran also helped by pouring water. This was done in the room of Hazrat Aisha (RA) where the Prophet (ﷺ) had passed away, and he was shrouded in three white Yemeni cotton sheets before burial.

Good to know

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) passed away on Monday, 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, 11 AH in Madina. Hazrat Ali (RA), being the closest male relative, performed the Ghusl while the body remained on the bed. The washing was done without removing the Prophet's shirt, as instructed by the angels according to narrations. After the Ghusl, the funeral prayer was offered individually by the companions, and he was buried in the same spot where he passed away — in the chamber of Hazrat Aisha (RA).
