Quick fact: The Holy Kaaba was initially constructed by Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) along with his son Hazrat Ismail (AS).

Explanation

The Holy Kaaba, the most sacred site in Islam located in Makkah, was originally built by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) with the assistance of his son Prophet Ismail (AS) by the command of Allah. The Quran mentions this in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127) where both prophets raised the foundations of the House. It is the first house of worship established for mankind, and its construction established Makkah as the center of monotheistic worship.

Good to know

The Kaaba is a cube-shaped stone structure draped in a black silk cloth known as the Kiswah, and Muslims around the world face towards it during their five daily prayers (Salah). Before the advent of Islam, the Kaaba had become a center for idol worship with 360 idols placed inside and around it. After the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cleansed the Kaaba of all idols and restored it to the monotheistic purpose for which it was originally built by Hazrat Ibrahim (AS).
