After the passing of Hazrat Khadija (RA) in the Year of Sorrow (Aam-ul-Huzn), the Prophet (SAW) was left alone with his daughters. A companion, Khawlah bint Hakim, suggested that he remarry and proposed Sawdah bint Zam'ah (RA), a widow who had migrated to Abyssinia with her late husband. The Prophet (SAW) married her in Shawwal of the same year, making her his second wife. Later, he also married Aisha (RA), though the marriage was consummated after migration to Madina.

Sawdah bint Zam'ah (RA) was among the early converts to Islam and had migrated to Abyssinia (Habsha) with her first husband, Sakran bin Amr. After her husband's death, the Prophet (SAW) married her in Makkah during the 10th year of Prophethood. She was known for her generosity, sense of humour, and devotion. Sawdah (RA) later willingly gifted her day to Aisha (RA) out of love for the Prophet (SAW) and his household.
