Explanation

Hadith are classified based on the number of narrators in each generation of the chain. A Mutawatir Hadith is one narrated by such a large number of people at every level that it is impossible for them to have conspired on a lie. When this condition is not met — meaning the number of narrators is limited or does not reach the threshold of Tawatur — the Hadith is termed Ahad (singular report). Ahad Hadith are further sub-classified into Mashhur (well-known), Aziz (rare), and Gharib (strange) based on the number of chains.

Good to know

The classification of Hadith into Mutawatir and Ahad is a fundamental concept in Hadith terminology (Mustalah al-Hadith). Mutawatir Hadith provide definitive knowledge (ilm al-yaqeen) and their authenticity is unquestionable, while Ahad Hadith provide speculative knowledge (ilm al-zann) and require further scrutiny of the chain and text. The majority of Hadith in famous collections like Sihah Sitta fall under the category of Ahad.
