Explanation

A mutawatir hadith is one narrated by such a large number of people at every level of its chain that it is impossible for them to have conspired upon a lie. Due to this mass transmission, the knowledge it imparts is considered definitive and certain (qat'i/yaqeeni), leaving no room for doubt. This is in contrast to ahad (solitary) hadith, which yield probable (zanni) knowledge. Mutawatir hadith are accepted without scrutiny of individual narrators and form a primary source of certain knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence and creed.

Good to know

Mutawatir hadith are classified into two types: mutawatir bil-lafz (verbatim mass transmission, like the famous hadith "Whoever lies about me intentionally...") and mutawatir bil-ma'na (mass transmission of meaning only, like the hadith about raising hands in dua). The number of mutawatir hadith is relatively small compared to the vast corpus of ahad hadith. Because they provide certain knowledge, mutawatir hadith can be used to establish fundamental articles of faith and can even abrogate or specify verses of the Quran according to majority scholars.
