Quick fact: Hazrat Ali (RA) ordered Hazrat Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali (RA) to place diacritical marks.

Explanation

Hazrat Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali (RA) is considered the founder of Arabic grammar (Nahw). On the instruction of Hazrat Ali (RA), he devised a system of diacritical marks (zabar, zer, pesh) for the Holy Quran so that non-Arab Muslims could recite the Quran correctly. This was a historic step for the preservation of the Arabic language and correct recitation of the Quran, laying the foundation of Arabic grammar.

Good to know

Hazrat Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali's real name was Zalim bin Amr, and he was a Tabi'i. He founded the science of grammar in Basra. It is said that when he heard someone reciting the Quran incorrectly, he devised the system of diacritical marks on the advice of Hazrat Ali (RA). Later, Hazrat Khalil bin Ahmad (RA) further refined this system.
