Quick fact: The Quran was first translated into Persian during the reign of the Samanid ruler Mansur I in the 10th century CE.

Explanation

The first complete translation of the Quran was rendered into Persian by a group of scholars commissioned by the Samanid ruler Mansur ibn Nuh (Mansur I) around 961 CE. This translation was based on the Tafsir of Tabari and was intended to make the Quran accessible to Persian-speaking Muslims. Later, the first Latin translation was done by Robert of Ketton in 1143 CE, and the first Urdu translation was completed by Shah Abdul Qadir Dehlavi in the early 19th century.

Good to know

The Persian translation of the Quran was undertaken during the Samanid dynasty, which ruled parts of Central Asia and Persia. Mansur I requested a translation that Persian speakers could understand, as Arabic was not their native tongue. This translation is historically significant as it marked the beginning of Quranic translations into non-Arabic languages, paving the way for translations into Turkish, Urdu, and numerous other languages over the centuries.
