Quick fact: Shah Wali Ullah was the first to translate the Holy Quran into Persian.

Explanation

Shah Wali Ullah (1703–1762) was a renowned Islamic scholar and reformer of the Indian subcontinent. He undertook the translation of the Holy Quran into Persian at a time when Persian was the dominant literary and administrative language of Muslim India, making the Quran accessible to the educated elite. His sons later translated the Quran into Urdu: Shah Abdul Qadir produced the first Urdu translation, while Shah Rafiuddin also contributed a separate Urdu rendering.

Good to know

Shah Wali Ullah's Persian translation of the Quran, titled "Fath al-Rahman," was completed around 1737–1738. This translation was a landmark effort in making the Quran accessible beyond Arabic-speaking scholars. His work inspired subsequent translations into regional languages across the subcontinent. Shah Wali Ullah is also famous for his magnum opus "Hujjatullah al-Baligha" and his efforts to revive Islamic thought in 18th-century India.
