Quick fact: The first translation of the Holy Quran into Urdu was done by Shah Abdul Qadir and Shah Rafiuddin, the sons of Shah Waliullah.

Explanation

Shah Abdul Qadir (1752–1813) and his brother Shah Rafiuddin (1750–1818) were the sons of the great Islamic scholar Shah Waliullah Dehlawi. Shah Abdul Qadir's Urdu translation, titled "Mawzih al-Quran," was the very first complete translation of the Quran into the Urdu language. Shah Rafiuddin also produced an Urdu translation, making both brothers pioneers in bringing the Quran to Urdu-speaking Muslims of the subcontinent. Their work laid the foundation for subsequent Urdu translations and helped spread Quranic understanding among common people.

Good to know

Shah Waliullah Dehlawi (1703–1762) was a renowned Islamic scholar who translated the Quran into Persian, which was the scholarly language of the time. His sons carried forward his mission by producing translations in Urdu, the language of the common people. Shah Abdul Qadir's translation was published in 1829 and remained the most popular Urdu translation for over a century. The translation movement in the subcontinent was part of a broader Islamic revival led by the Shah Waliullah family.
