Explanation

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar consists of 12 lunar months. Shawal is the 10th month, immediately following Ramadan (the 9th month). The 1st of Shawal marks Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, which is celebrated after the completion of Ramadan. The months before and after Shawal are Ramadan (9th) and Dhul Qadah (11th) respectively.

Good to know

The Islamic lunar calendar begins with Muharram as the 1st month. The 12 months in order are: Muharram, Safar, Rabi-ul-Awwal, Rabi-ul-Thani, Jamadi-ul-Awwal, Jamadi-ul-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawal, Dhul Qadah, and Dhul Hijjah. Shawal is significant as it begins with Eid-ul-Fitr and also contains the six recommended fasts of Shawal, which the Prophet (PBUH) encouraged believers to observe.
