Explanation

Fasting during the month of Ramadan was made obligatory in the second year after Hijrah (2 A.H.), in the month of Sha'ban. The obligation is established in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 183, which commands believers to fast as it was prescribed for those before them. This was the same year in which the Battle of Badr took place and Zakat was also made obligatory, making 2 A.H. a significant year for the institutionalization of key Islamic pillars.

Good to know

The obligation of fasting was revealed in stages. Initially, Muslims were given the option to either fast or feed a poor person (fidyah), but later this option was restricted and fasting became mandatory upon sighting the Ramadan moon. Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam and the Quranic verses regarding its obligation are found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183-185). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fasted a total of nine Ramadans during his lifetime after the obligation was prescribed.
