Quick fact: The well of Ruma was purchased by Hazrat Usman (R.A) and declared as a trust (Waqf) for the Muslims.

Explanation

During the Madinan period, Muslims faced a severe water shortage as the well of Ruma was owned by a Jew who charged high prices for its water. The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged the Sahaba to purchase the well, promising Paradise for whoever did so. Hazrat Usman (R.A) bought the well for 20,000 dirhams and dedicated it as a Waqf (charitable trust) for all Muslims, making it the first endowment in Islamic history. This act reflects Hazrat Usman's generosity and his title "Ghani" (the generous).

Good to know

The well of Ruma, also known as Bi'r Ruma, was located in Madina and was one of the few sources of fresh water at the time. Hazrat Usman (R.A) initially purchased half of the well and later bought the remaining half when the owner realized the Muslims were benefiting from it. This Waqf continued to serve the community and stands as a landmark example of Islamic endowments, with Hazrat Usman (R.A) being remembered for this noble charitable act.
