Explanation

Al-Kafi is the most authoritative and comprehensive collection of Shia hadith, compiled by Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kulayni (d. 329 AH/941 CE). It is one of the four major Shia hadith books (Kutub al-Arba'ah) and contains over 16,000 narrations. Al-Kulayni spent nearly 20 years compiling this monumental work during the period of the Minor Occultation (Ghaybat al-Sughra) of the Twelfth Imam.

Muhammad bin Yaqub Al Kulayni was a prominent Shia scholar born in the village of Kulayn near Rayy (modern-day Tehran, Iran). His magnum opus Al-Kafi is divided into three sections: Usul al-Kafi (beliefs), Furu al-Kafi (jurisprudence), and Rawdat al-Kafi (miscellaneous traditions). He died in Baghdad in 329 Hijri and was buried near the Bab al-Kufa gate. The four major Shia hadith collections (Kutub al-Arba'ah) also include Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih by Sheikh Saduq, Tahdhib al-Ahkam, and Al-Istibsar, both by Sheikh Tusi.
