Quick fact: Al-Istibsar is one of the four major Shia hadith collections and was compiled by Abu Jafar Tusi.

Explanation

Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Tusi (d. 460 AH), also known as Shaykh al-Ta'ifah, was a prominent Shia scholar who authored two of the four canonical Shia hadith books: Al-Istibsar and Tahdhib al-Ahkam. Al-Istibsar specifically deals with reconciling apparently contradictory hadiths and is considered one of the most important works in Shia jurisprudence. The other two books of the Shia four-book canon (Al-Kutub al-Arba'ah) are Al-Kafi by Al-Kulayni and Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih by Al-Saduq.

Good to know

Abu Jafar Tusi was a prolific scholar who wrote extensively on hadith, fiqh, and theology. He studied under Shaykh al-Mufid and Sharif al-Murtada, and later moved from Baghdad to Najaf, where he established the Hawza seminary. His works Tahdhib al-Ahkam and Al-Istibsar together form half of the Al-Kutub al-Arba'ah, which are the four foundational hadith collections in Twelver Shia Islam, alongside Al-Kafi and Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih.
