Explanation

The change of Qibla took place in the second year of Hijrah (2 AH) while the Prophet (PBUH) was leading the Zuhr prayer in the mosque of Banu Salama in Madina. During the prayer, revelation came commanding the change of direction from Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Makkah. The Prophet (PBUH) and the companions turned mid-prayer, completing the remaining two rak'ahs facing the new Qibla. This mosque later became known as Masjid al-Qiblatain (the Mosque of the Two Qiblas).

Good to know

The change of Qibla was a significant event that distinguished the Muslim community from the Jews and Christians who prayed facing Jerusalem. The Muslims had been praying towards Masjid al-Aqsa for about 16 to 17 months after the Hijrah before this divine command. The Quranic verse regarding this change is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:144), where Allah instructs the Prophet to turn his face towards Masjid al-Haram.
