Explanation

The change of Qibla took place in Sha'ban 2 AH, about 16-17 months after the Prophet's (PBUH) migration to Madina. While the Prophet (PBUH) was leading Salah in the Masjid al-Qiblatain, revelation came instructing him to turn towards the Kaaba in Makkah. This event marked a significant shift, distinguishing the Muslim Ummah from the Jews and Christians who faced Jerusalem, and establishing the Kaaba as the permanent direction of prayer for Muslims.

Good to know

Before the Hijra, the Prophet (PBUH) used to pray facing both the Kaaba and Jerusalem by standing in a position where both were aligned. After migration to Madina, Muslims initially prayed towards Jerusalem (Bait-ul-Maqdas) for about 16-17 months. The mosque where this event occurred is known as Masjid al-Qiblatain (the Mosque of the Two Qiblas), located in Madina. The Quranic verse commanding this change is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:144).
