Quick fact: The word Taraweeh literally means to rest, as worshippers take short rests after every four rak'ahs during this special night prayer in Ramadan.

Explanation

Taraweeh is derived from the Arabic root word "ra-wa-ha" which means to rest or relax. It is called Taraweeh because the prayer is performed in sets of two or four rak'ahs, and after every four rak'ahs, the worshippers take a brief pause to rest before resuming. This special congregational night prayer is offered only during the month of Ramadan after the Isha prayer and is a highly recommended Sunnah established by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Good to know

The Taraweeh prayer was formally established as a congregational prayer during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), who instructed Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA) to lead the people in 20 rak'ahs. Before this, the Prophet (PBUH) had prayed Taraweeh individually and in congregation on a few nights but discontinued leading it publicly out of fear that it might be made obligatory upon his Ummah. The prayer is typically completed with the recitation of the entire Quran over the course of Ramadan.
