Explanation

Qasr refers to the Islamic ruling that allows a traveler (musafir) to shorten the four-rak'ah obligatory prayers (Zuhr, Asr, and Isha) to two rak'ahs. This concession is based on the Quranic verse (4:101) and the consistent practice of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The minimum distance for a journey that qualifies for Qasr is generally considered to be approximately 48 miles (77 km) according to the majority of scholars, though opinions vary among different schools of thought.

Good to know

Qasr is often combined with Jama' (combining prayers), where a traveler may pray Zuhr and Asr together or Maghrib and Isha together. While Qasr shortens the number of rak'ahs, Jama' allows two prayers to be performed at the time of one. The permissibility of Qasr is agreed upon by all major schools of Islamic jurisprudence, making it an established and important ruling in Islamic law for travelers.
