Explanation

Wahi is an Arabic term that literally means a swift, secret communication. In Islamic terminology, it refers specifically to the divine message that Allah (SWT) conveyed to His prophets. The most significant form of Wahi is the Quran, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through Angel Jibreel over a period of 23 years. Wahi is the foundational concept of Risalat (Prophethood), as it is the means by which Allah's guidance reaches humanity.

Good to know

Wahi can take different forms as mentioned in the Quran (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:51): direct speech, from behind a veil, or through an angel messenger. The first Wahi received by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq in the Cave of Hira. The process of Wahi was sometimes intense, with the Prophet (PBUH) experiencing physical signs such as perspiration even on cold days or hearing a ringing sound like a bell.
