Explanation

Umer Khayyam, along with a team of astronomers, was commissioned by the Seljuk Sultan Jalal al-Din Malik Shah to reform the Persian calendar. The result was the Jalali Calendar (also known as the Malik Shahi Calendar), introduced in 1079 CE. It was one of the most accurate solar calendars ever devised, even more precise than the Gregorian calendar, with an error of only one day in about 5,000 years.

Good to know

The Jalali Calendar was named after Sultan Jalal al-Din Malik Shah, the Seljuk ruler who patronized its development. Umer Khayyam worked at the observatory in Isfahan alongside other scholars like Abd al-Rahman al-Khazini. Khayyam is also world-famous for his poetic work, the Rubaiyat, and his contributions to algebra and geometry.
